What three posisitve things are mutualistic relationships usually for?
nutritional benefit, protection or somewhere to live
1 of 9
What are the two usual negative interactions?(What is Amensalism?)
Predation and Amensalism- thiss is when some microbes inhibit the growth of other species to increase their chances of survival
2 of 9
What are the three named interactions which are posisitve?`
Commensalism, cooperation, mutualism
3 of 9
What is a mutualism interaction?
Different organisms benefit by the individuals involced metabolically depending on one another
4 of 9
What is the first example for a mutualism intercation?
Tube worms and sulfur bacteria, located on black smokers at mid ocean ridges. Tube worms get their nutrition from the oxidising affects of the bacteria.
5 of 9
What similar relationship is there compared to tube worms and sulfur bacteria and what occurs in that relationship?
Similarly, coral species gain the products of photosynthesis done by zooxanthellae algae that live on the surface of the corl. In turn the alage gain the waste products from the coral such as oxygen and nitrogen.
6 of 9
How can fish also benefit from bacteria? What is the bacteria called?
Aliivibrio bacteria are maintained in light organs of the fish due to their abilty to emitt fluorescent light. The fish use this light to attrcat prey as part of their hunting strategy
7 of 9
What is the common mutualistic realtionship in plants?
Nitrogen fixing bacteria such as Rhizobium seen in leguminous plants at root nodules in the soil.
8 of 9
What is occuring in the relationship of leguminous plants and rhizobium bacteria?
The bacteria fix nitrogen from the soil (atmosphere) to ammonia which he plant needs. Oxygen and other organic nutrients are produced by the plant from photosynthesis which is then available to the bacteria
