When water and carbon dioxide combine what do they form?
Carbonic acids
1 of 11
Why do lungs have a role in acid base balance?
As the carbonic acids formed during respiration are controlled by processes in the lungs.
2 of 11
What is Brownian motion of molecules?
That the molecules in a gas/liquid move to a spread of molecules from high to low concentrations.
3 of 11
What is the respiratory system made of?
Nasal passage, oral cavity, pharynx, larynx, trachea and lungs
4 of 11
What does the larynx contain?
the vocal chords and the epiglottis.Epiglottis closes when eating food so that food does not enter the lungs.
5 of 11
What are nasal turbinates and what do they do?
bones in the nasal cavity help circulate the air, heating and humidifying the air as well as trapping dust particles before it enters the lungs.
6 of 11
What is the mucociliary escalator and what does it do?
The respiratory tract is lined by ciliary epithelium which have goblet cells that secrete mucus.
7 of 11
Describe alveoli
Alveoli make up 50-100m2 surface area and are each 250microm in diameter. They contain epithelial cells of various types, type 1 and type 2 which is secretory.
8 of 11
What is the equation to calculate alveolar ventilation?
Va=(Vt x RR) -(DSV-RR) RR=respiration rate Vt = tidal volume DSV=Dead Space Volume
9 of 11
What is the respiratoryy tract made of?
Conducting and respiratory zone.
10 of 11
What is the chest wall made of?
rib cage, sternum, internal and external intercostal muscles. The diaphragm and pleural sac surrounding the lungs with intrapleural fluid filling the space between the visceral and parietal pleura.
