What is a disease? What is it a consequence of?
any state in which the health of the organism is impaired. consequence of failed homeostasis
1 of 14
What is pathobiology?
study of biological mechanisms underlying disease processes.
2 of 14
What is Aetiology?
the primary cause of a specific disease.
3 of 14
What is Pathogenesis?
the series of biological changes leading to clinically evident disease.
4 of 14
What is Pathology?
diagnostic evidence of disease
5 of 14
What causes tuberculosis?
Mycobacterium tuberculosis. airborne transmission, infects lungs.
6 of 14
What is a risk factor?
an intrinsic biological predisposition, a susceptibility or tendency to develop a disease. It can also be an extrinsic variable exposure that makes a disease more likely.
7 of 14
What do these interactions between intrinsic and extrinsic factors determine?
an organisms physical characteristics (phenotype).
8 of 14
Intrinsic risk factors are also known as 'Predispositions'. Give examples?
Blood- sickle cell anaemia. Metabolic- diabetes, gallstones. Cellular- Autoimmune (rheumatoid arthritis), Degenerative and ageing (Alzheimer's). Structural- spina bifida, atheroma, osteoarthritis.
9 of 14
Extrinsic risk factors are also known as 'Exposures'. They can be physical, chemical, biological and nutritional. Give examples of Physical extrinsic risk factors?
Physical- trauma (fracture), Radiation (cancer).
10 of 14
Give examples of chemical extrinsic risk factors?
Toxic substances (tobacco lung damage). Inflammatory agents (Asthma).
11 of 14
Give examples of biological extrinsic risk factors?
Bacterial (tuberculosis). Virus (AIDS, hepatitis). Protozoa (malaria)
12 of 14
Give examples of nutritional extrinsic risk factors?
Unbalanced diet (obesity, diabetes).
13 of 14
What is Epidemiology?
the study of the distribution and determinants of health and disease in populations- can also help understand the Pathobiology of a disease.
