Key political unit in modern society, a territory ruled by a powerful centralised state, whose population usually share the same language & culture. The state is the focal point of modern society, organising social life on a national basis

The economy of modern societies is capitalist. Based on the private ownership of the means of production and the use of wage labourers.

What is meant by Rationality, Science and Technology?
Rational, secular ways of thinking dominate the influence of religious explanations of the world. Science becomes increasingly important in industry, medicine and communications

What is meant by individualism?
Tradition, custom and ascribed status becomes less important. There is greater personal freedom.
