Media Sound Terminology

I used my class resources and tried to create short and simple defintions for each sound technique. Good luck!

Soundtrack
The music.

Mode of Address
How the character addresses the audience.

Voiceovers
Often explains a back-story, thoughts etc. and is not heard by the characters. The person is not speaking at the same time as the film.

Ambient Sounds
Background sounds which are present in a scene or location.

Direct Address
When the character speaks directly to the audience (breaking the fourth wall).

Diegetic Sound
Dialogue, music and sounds heard by the characters.

Non-Diegetic Sound
Sounds, music etc. that the characters can't hear/the audience can hear.

Dialogue
The script in which the characters speak.

Themes and Stings
Introductory music.

Sound Effects
Sounds added in after filming which add effect.

Sound Perspective
The apparent distance of a sound.

Sound Bridges
Can lead in or out of a scene as the sound continues between scenes. Stresses the connection between both scenes since their mood is still the same.

Sound Motifs
A sound effect or music that is associated with a particular character, setting, situation etc. (think of Darth Vader and his heavy breathing).

Synchronous Sound
Sound that matches what is happening in a scene.

Asynchronous Sound
Sound that is not matched to a visible source.

Sound Mixing
The process of combing different sound sources.
