What is a code?
A sign or symbol.

The meaning created by a code.

What is a technical code?
Camera techniques, lighting, mise-en-scene and sound. (etc.)

What is a symbolic code?
Objects, setting, body language etc. Things that symbolise somrthing/create meaning.

What is an action code?
When a character's actions indicate what is going to happen. E.g. A character carrying a suitcase- they are going on a journey.

What is an enigma code?
When the scene gives very little away, leaving the audience asking questions. E.g. A hand writing a letter. Who is writing the letter? What does it say?

Name the 5 elements of mise-en-scene.
1.Settings and props. 2.Costume, hair and makeup. 3.Facial expressions and body language. 4.Lighting and colour. 5.Positioning of characters/objects.

What is mise-en-scene?
What is put into a scene or frame. It communicates essential visual information to the audience.

Forms, audiences, institutions and representations.

What is a linear narrative?
A story that starts at the beginning,goes through the middle, and ends at the end. (Normal)

What is a non-linear narrative?
A story that doesn't follow the typical structure, such as telling the same story from different character's point of view, or using flashbacks/flash-forwards.

Hero, villain, donor, helper, princess, princess' father, dispatcher and false hero.

What is iconography?
The particular signs we associate with particular genres, such as physical attributes and dress of actors, the settings and typical props.

Audio, print, web and moving image.

What does representation mean?
The way things are represented to the audience. For example, soaps are a representation of real life, not exactly alike. It is not possible for the media to represent the world, they create meaning.
