Cartilage
Living tissue that occurs in the skeleton; cartilage is tough and elastic.
1 of 38
Tendon
Tissue that connects muscle to bones; tendons are tough and do not stretch.
2 of 38
Synovial Joint
Joint in the body that is lubricated by synovial fluid, such as the knee, hip, and elbow. the joint also has a synovial membrane, ligaments and cartilage.
3 of 38
Ligament
Tissue that holds bones together at a joint.
4 of 38
Blood Vessel
tube-like structures that carry blood throughout the body. Blood vessels include arteries, veins and capillaries.
5 of 38
Atria
Top chambers of the heart that receive blood from veins.
6 of 38
Ventricles
Lower chambers of the heart that contract and force blood out of the arteries.
7 of 38
Pulse
Expansion and recoil of the arteries as blood is pumped into them from the heart. The pulse gives a measure of the heart rate.
8 of 38
SAN
Sinoatrial node, part of the pacemaker in the heart that produces electrical impulses which cause the atria to attack.
9 of 38
AVN
Antrioventricular node, part of the pacemaker in the heart that transmits electrical impulses to the central part of the hearts.
10 of 38
ECG
Electrocardiogram, a trace measured by doctors that shows the electrical activity in the heart.
11 of 38
Bypass Surgery
operation in which a piece of blood vessel is taken from elsewhere in the body and transplanted to bypass blocked coronary arteries, supplying the heart muscle with blood.
12 of 38
Traumatic
Physically damaging.
13 of 38
Platelets
Small structures in the blood that are involved in blood clotting.
14 of 38
Fibrin
Insoluble protein that forms a blood clot when you cut yourself.
15 of 38
Agglutinins
Antigens (proteins) on the surface of red blood cells, that determine your blood group.
16 of 38
Permeable
Allows substances to pass through it freely.
17 of 38
Residual Air
Air that remains in the lungs after you have breathed out fully.
18 of 38
Tidal Volume
Volume of air breathed in during one breath.
19 of 38
Vital Capacity
Maximum volume of air you can breath in, plus your tidal volume, plus the maximum volume of air you can breath out after taking in a big breath.
20 of 38
Lung Capacity
Total volume of the lungs, made up of vital capacity plus residual air.
21 of 38
Macrophage
White blood cell that ingest foreign particles and pathogens.
22 of 38
Oesophagus
Another name for gullet: in the digestive system; a tube that leads from the mouth to the stomach.

Gullet
Another name for Oesophagus: in the digestive system; a tube that leads from the mouth to the stomach.
24 of 38
Carbohydrase
Enzyme that digests carbohydrates to simple sugars.
25 of 38
Lipase
Enzyme that digests fats to fatty acids and glycerol.
26 of 38
Protease
Enzyme that digests proteins to fatty amino acids.
27 of 38
Urea
Substance produced in the liver from the breakdown of amino acids, and removes by the kidneys in the urine.
28 of 38
Glomerulus
Knot of capillaries in the nephron of the kidney, where filtration occurs.
29 of 38
Selective Reabsorption
Absorption of useful substances such as glucose from the kidney tubule back into the blood.
30 of 38
Afferent Arteriole
Blood vessel that carries the blood into the glomerulus.
31 of 38
Efferent Arteriole
Blood vessel that carries blood away from the glomerulus.
32 of 38
Pituitary Gland
Gland in the brain that secretes hormones, including antidiurectic hormone (ADH).
33 of 38
Ovulation
Release of a mature egg from an ovary.
34 of 38
IVF
In vitro fertilisation - method to help achieve pregnancy in women who cannot become pregnant naturally.
35 of 38
Amniocentesis
Test that may be carried out on pregnant women to test for fetal abnormality(problems with the fetus).
36 of 38
Tissue Match
Matching the tissues of donor and recipient in a transplant operation, so that their antigens are similar and their is less chance of rejection.
37 of 38
Immunosuppressant Drugs
Drugs that suppress the immune system, given to recipients of a transplanted organ to reduce the reduce of rejection.
