Infrastructure
The economic base of society

Other aspects of society, aside from the economic base- the political, legal and educational institutions, belief and value systems

Means of production
Those parts of the forces of production which can be legally owned e.g land in feudal society

Class conflict
The conflict of intrest between the two major classes in society - those who own the means of production and those who do not

Subject class
Those who do not own the means of production and are subject to the power of the ruling class

Proletariat
The subject class under capitalism, made up of workers who sell their labour power in return for wages

Capitalism
A mode of production based on privately owned businesses run for the purpose of making prodit. The process is organised in terms of market in which commodities, including labour power itself, are bought and sold

Labour power
The capacity to work (e.g. skills, physical effort) which is bought and employed by capitalists and from which the capitalist extacts surplus value

Surplus value
The difference between the costs of labour and the wealth recieved from that labour by those who own the means of production.

Alienation
The breakdown of the natural interconnection among people and between people and what they produce

Ruling class ideology
A set of beliefs and values which supports the position of the ruling class by distorting reality

False conciousness
A false view which prevents people from seeing the reality of their situation, their exploitation and their false intrests

Class conciousness
This occurs when the subject class, for example the proletariat, become fully aware of the ruth about their situation and their class intrest

Communism
A classles society in which the means of production are communally owned and people are equal, free from oppression, and fulfilled as human beings
