- agreed with marx and said that inequality is caused by organisation of economy
- but more to inequality than economic relationship
- control of social power significanty in how it's organised
- can control wealth, good looks, respect and knowledge (desirable but limited)
- Marx = classes polarise in rich vs poor Weber = high social class and fragmentation

- power = ability to impose one's will over other's society organised in a system of power hierarchy
- class power - unequal access of any person or group of people to possession or wealth
- Status - some are viewed as socially superior (religious leader may be respected)
- Party - being able to influence others in terms of rules and law creation
- says class inequality is only variation important inequality - social power is key to understanding inequality not based on economy, social exclusion
- Propertied class - money, status and political power. Professional class - have status and some money
- Petty Bourgeoisie - small business owners, less status money and power but Working Class - little to no status, high demand skills and social resources = old, young, unskilled and disables

- Borris and Norris - dual labour market - P = middle and ruling so good conditions, status (white males) S = low status, lack power (women or EM)
- Giddens - middle class see skills based on educational and social qualifications to advantage in workforce.W.C can only see labour - vulnerable to tech changes;
- Rex and Tomlinson - applied traditional ideas to race relations (marx dont account) so lack political power.
