?
Forgetting
Persons loss of ability to recall or recognise something that they have previously learned
1 of 11
Interference
An explanation of forgetting in terms of one memory disrupting the ability to recall another causing one memory to be disorted or entireley forgetten
2 of 11
When is interference most likely to occur?
When the two memories have some similarity. McGeoch and Mc donald demonstrated this- learnt list of 10 words until they remembered them w 100% accuracy. all lists had different levels of similairty, they had to learn another list- accuracy dependedonsimia

Proactive interference
past learning interferences with current attempts to learn something, Like remembering new phone number, but memory of old number interferes with attempts to remember new information.
4 of 11
Retroactive interference
Current attempts to learn something distyrupt the ability top recall past learning. Once you learn new phone number its hard to remember old number again.

Explain muller(1900) studies into retroactive interference
Him and his students were first to identify the effects of retroactive interference, gave them list of nonsense syllables- learned them then had retention interval. If they given task durinhg this, they did worse.

What did brenton underwood (1957) discover in terms of PROACTIVE INTERFERENCE
The more a person has to learn, the worse their overall recall. Word lists 10 over 24 hours=20 percent recall compared to 1= 70 percent recall.

strenth of interference
has real world application to advertising. Danaher found ppls recall and recogition of an advertisers message was impaired when people were exposed to two or more brands in the space of a week. to deal w this advertisders should run ads multiple times a d

what does this lead to
maximising profitability and reduced competition

weakness
research is very artifical, memorising nonsense sylabbles is artifcal- so has low mundane realism/ ecological validty and generalisbility. parctipants may also lack motivation to remember words, making effects seem worse than rlly are

weakness
only explains some situations of forgetting- as for interfernece two memories must be fairly similar- unimportant explanation for everyday forgetting
