psychology lesson 2

forgetting:

  • there are two explanations to forgetting:
  • interference
  • retrieval failure

Interference:

  • when two pieces of information disrupt each other
  • results in forgetting one or both or in some distortion of the memory
  • mainly for the LIM
  • when information has reached the LIM it is more or less permanent
  • so forgetting of LIM's is most likely because we can't get access to them even though they are available
  • interference between memories makes it harder for us to locate them

Two types of interference:

  • proactive interference (PI) [before]
  • retroactive interference (RI)
