Rag Desh Rag
Improvisation based on notes of rag. Over 100 rags most of which are associated with a time of day or celebration. Rag Desh is typically performed in late evening, associated with monsoon season. More complicated than a scale, as asc and desc differ.

Rhythm in Indian music based on patterns of beats called tal. Tempo can fluctuate. Tintal is 16 (4+4+4+4). 1st beat of tal is sam.

Alap: slow, impro, free-time, soloist introduces notes of rag, accompanied by drone. Jhor: can intro tal, more structured. Gat: can intro tal, pre-composed. Jhalla: intense "a shower".

Sitar: meend (pitch bend), microtones. Tabla, bayan and dayan. Alap, Gat 1 (Jhaptal: 2+3+2+3), Gat 2 (Tintal: 4+4+4+4).

Bhajan, Hindu devotional song. Singer, sarod (plucked-string, no frets), sarangi (bowed-string, resembles voice), tabla, cymbals, pakhawaj. Alap, Bhajan in verses (Keherwa Tal: 2+2+2+2), (bandish). Mellismatic.
