Alexuis Comnenus
The Emperor of the Byzantine Empire at the time of the First Crusade. His empire was being invaded by the Seljuk Turks and his call for military help sparked the first crusade.

Kilij Arslan
The new Sultan and leader of the Seljuk Turks. His city of Nicaea was attacked and in retaliation he attacked the crusader forces at Dorylaeum.

Tacitius
The General of the Byzantine forces that travelled with the crusaders. He left during the attack on Antioch, possibly persuaded by Bohemond that his life was in danger.

Godfrey of Bouillon
The first Christian ‘King’ of Jerusalem, he joined the crusade due to his strong religious views. He was known as the ‘Advocate of the Holy Sepulchre’ rather than King but he died in 1100.

Bishop Adhemur of Puy
The Pope’s representative, appointed to help to lead the expedition along with the eight princes. However he died soon after the siege of Antioch during an epidemic.

Baldwin of Boulogne
Godfrey’s brother. He was going to join the church but decided to marry instead. When his wife died on the crusade he took the city of Edessa and became Count. Later King of Jerusalem.

Raymond of Toulouse
A highly religious man who sold his belongings in order to join the Crusade. He fought with Bohemond over the city of Antioch. He was a close friend to Pope Urban.

Pope Urban II
The Pope who received Alexius’ letter asking for help and who preached for the First Crusade in November 1095. He died just after Jerusalem was taken in 1099.

Malik Shah
The previous Sultan of the Seljuk Turks. He died in 1092 along with his closest advisors and other viziers and caliphs. This meant that there was no strong leader to unite the Muslim forces.

Peter the Hermit
Peter the Hermit heard the call for the crusade and lead the People’s Crusade. After they were massacred he waited in Constantinople for the main crusader force.
