Dams
Huge walls built across rivers, usually in upper course
1 of 14
Reservoir
Formed behind the dam
2 of 14
Embankments
Raised walls build along a river bank
3 of 14
Flood relief channels
Channels built that divert water around important areas or take it elsewhere if water level in river becomes too high
4 of 14
2 benefits of reservoirs
1- store water and reduce flood risk. 2- water can be drinking water and used to generate HEP
5 of 14
2 Disadvantages of dams
expensive and creating reservoir can flood existing settlements
6 of 14
1 disadvantage of reservoirs
eroded material deposited in reservoir so farmland downstream becomes less fertile
7 of 14
channel straightening
river course is straightened. Meanders are cut out by building artificial straight channels.
8 of 14
benefit of channel straightening
reduces flood risk as water moves out area quicker
9 of 14
2 disadvantages of channel straightening
more erosion downstream and flooding may happen downstream
10 of 14
benefit of embankments
less frequent flooding
11 of 14
disadvantage of embankments
expensive and risk of severe flooding if water rises above level of embankments
12 of 14
benefits of flood relief channels
prevents flooding because river discharge reduced and water release is controlled by gates
13 of 14
disadvantages of flood relief channels
increased discharge where relief channel rejoins river which can cause flooding.
