This is where a straight path is cut down the centre of the meanders on a river

How do meanders prevent flooding?
When a river has meanders this results in the water flowing slowly through the course of the river, meaning there is a high chance of flooding in the river. A straight path means that the water will flow quickly lessening the chance of flooding
