What is food security?
The availability, at all times, of adequate supplies of basic foodstuffs.

How many people, worldwide, are chronically hungry?
Over 1 billion - three quarters are from rural areas, and 60% are women.

What is free trade?
international trade left to its natural course without tariffs, quotas, or other restrictions.

What is subsistence farming?
When a plot of land produces only enough to support the family working on it/the local community.

What is commercial farming?
Usually takes place on a large, profit making scale, trying to maximise the return on inputs/seeking the maximum yields per unit of land. Commercial farms often grow more than one type of crop/have more than one type of livestock.

What is extensive farming?
The capital and labour is small in relation to the amount of land being farmed.

What is intensive farming?
Farming where the amount of labour is high even if the amount of capital is low in relation to the area being farmed.

What is arable farming?
Growing crops, usually on more favoured, flatter land with more fertile soil.

What is livestock farming?
Involving animals, usually on less favourable land.

What is integrated pest management?
A pest control strategy, with and array of complementary methods, natural predators and parasites and biological controls, using pesticides only as a last resort.

What is micro propagation?
Using tissue culture to allow the rapid multiplication of plant lets. Materials can be replicated quickly and properties fixed. It is expensive, and infections can be passed on quickly.

What is appropriate technology?
The use of small scale, sustainable, low tech ideas appropriate to the local climate and environment and the wealth, skills and needs of the local population.

What is land reform?
The redistribution of land. It can be used to overcome inefficiencies in the use of land and labour, by redistributing land to individual farmers, landless people and communal groups, the consolidation of small fragmented farms.

What is pastoralism?
A subsistence pattern in which people make their living by tending herds of large animals.
