poem, audens apathy to tragedy, his monologue, serves an allegorical purpose, short abrupt start to show us that tragedy can strike anywhere this can be explored with the children on the pond,
2 of 5
form #2
the poem is written in free verse may be to symbolise that tragedy is also free to choose who ever. conversational tone presents irony through onomatopeic language as it makes tragedy trivial. the poem becomes more prosaic than poetic not aesthetic
3 of 5
form #3
the poem doesnt follow any specific form. it is though quite ironically used to be 21 lines half a sonnet that is obviously not the aim of the poem to talk about love.
4 of 5
structure
the poem is actually quite unstructured. auden constructs the poem of one stanza. but it reads like two stanzas because of the change of tone that starts with ''anyhow''
