Electricity and Energy Flashcards

?
State what each of the following are measured in: Current, Power, Energy, Potential Difference.
Amps (A), Watts (W), Joules (J), Volts (V).
1 of 13
What is the job of the Carbon Brushes?
They press on the Slip Rings in order to make electrical contact with the rest of the circuit.
2 of 13
What is the National Grid?
It is the system of wires that transmit energy from power stations to palces such as homes, schools and factories.
3 of 13
Increasing the voltage does what to the current?
Decreases the current.
4 of 13
Do generators produce a direct current or an alternating current?
An alternating current.
5 of 13
What is the job of the Slip Rings?
They allow the coil to spin without he wires getting twisted.
6 of 13
What is the power of an appliance?
The amount of energy it transfers every second (measured in Watts).
7 of 13
What is current?
It is the amount of charge flowing past a certain point each second - like frequency.
8 of 13
What is voltage?
It is the amount of energy transferred by a current.
9 of 13
State the nine forms of energy.
Chemical, Elastic Potential, Electrical, Gravitational Potential, Kinetic, Light, Nuclear, Sound, Thermal.
10 of 13
What is efficiency?
It is a way of saying how good it is at transferring energy into useful forms.
11 of 13
State two advantages of Fossil Fuels.
1) They are currently the cheapest way to get electricity. 2) Electricity from Fossil Fuels is available all the time.
12 of 13
State three disadvantages of nuclear power.
1) Nuclear power produces radioactive waste that has to be sealed away and buried so that no one is harmed. 2) Uranium will run out one day. 3) Many people do not want a nuclear power station building near them, because there is risk of accident.
