Where does conduction occur?
In solids.
1 of 36
Do all objects emit infrared radiation?
Yes.
2 of 36
What are the best absorbers and emitters?
Matt black surfaces.
3 of 36
What does the kinetic theory explain?
The properties of different states of matter.
4 of 36
Name a property of solids
They have a fixed shape and cannot flow this is because the particles cannot move from place to place or they cannot be compressed or squashed this is because the particles are close together and have no space to move into.
5 of 36
In what area is the liquid less dense during convection?
In hot areas.
6 of 36
What happens during evaporation?
The particles absorb heat energy, they start to move faster and start to vibrate causing some of the particles to escape. The remaining liquid is then cooler.
7 of 36
What factors affect the rate of condensation and evaporation?
The surface area of the liquid is increased or the temperature is increased.
8 of 36
In terms of insulating buildings, which one is better to have? A high u value or a low u value?
A low u value.
9 of 36
What is specific heat capacity?
The amount of energy required to raise the temperature of 1kg of a substance by 1°C
10 of 36
Name all of the different forms of energy.
Magnetic, kinetic, heat, light, gravitational potential, chemical, sound, electrical, elastic potential and nuclear.
11 of 36
What is the law of conservation of mass?
Energy can be transferred usefully, stored or dissipated. It cannot be created or destroyed.
12 of 36
How do you calculate efficiency?
efficiency = (useful energy out ÷ total energy in) × 100 (for a percentage efficiency)
13 of 36
What is payback time?
Payback time is how long it takes for something you changed in the house to pay for itself over time.
14 of 36
What are the disadvantages of using fossil fuels?
They are a non renewable source of energy. Some fossil fuels such as coal and oil release sulfur dioxide which contributes to acid rain. When fossil fuels are burnt they release carbon dioxide which is a greenhouse gas and increases global warming.
15 of 36
Name 2 renewable sources of energy.
Wind, wave, tidal, hydroelectric, solar and geothermal energy.
16 of 36
What do step up transformers do?
They increase the voltage.
17 of 36
What are waves?
Waves are vibrations that transfer energy from place to place without matter (solid, liquid or gas) being transferred.
18 of 36
What is the substance that some waves travel through?
The medium.
19 of 36
What are the 2 different types of waves?
Transverse waves and longitudinal waves.
20 of 36
What is another word for vibration?
Oscillations.
21 of 36
Name some transverse waves.
Any wave in the electromagnetic spectrum.
22 of 36
Name 2 examples of longitudinal waves.
Seismic and sound waves.
23 of 36
What is compression and rarefaction?
Compression is where the oscillations are close together. Rarefaction is where the oscillations are far apart.
24 of 36
What is amplitude, wavelength and frequency?
Amplitude is the height of a wave. Wavelength is is the distance between a point on one wave and the same point on the next wave. Frequency is the number of waves produced by a source each second
25 of 36
What is frequency measured in?
In Hertz (Hz)
26 of 36
How do you calculate wave speed?
v = f × λ (v = wave speed, measured in m/s. f = frequency, measured in Hz. λ is wavelength, measured in m)
27 of 36
What is refraction of light?
Refraction of light is the change in direction of a light wave when its speed changes, normally observed when the wave moves from one medium to another
28 of 36
What is diffraction?
When waves meet a gap in a barrier, they carry on through the gap. However, the waves spread out to some extent into the area beyond the gap. This is called diffraction.
29 of 36
The greater the amplitude...?
The louder the sound.
30 of 36
The greater the frequency...?
The higher the pitch.
31 of 36
Name all of the waves in the electromagnetic spectrum.
Gamma rays, x rays, ultraviolet, visible light, infrared, microwaves and radio waves.
32 of 36
What is the big bang theory?
The theory states that originally all the matter in the universe was concentrated into a single incredibly tiny point. This began to enlarge rapidly in a hot explosion (called the Big Bang), and it is still expanding today.
33 of 36
What is the Doppler effect?
Where there is a change in frequency and wavelength. When a source moves towards an observer, the observed wavelength decreases and the frequency increases. When a source moves away from an observer, the observed wavelength increases and the freque
34 of 36
How do we know that the sun contains helium?
Because there are black lines in the spectrum of the light from the Sun where helium has absorbed light.
35 of 36
The further a star is from us...?
The more light is red-shifted. This tells us that distant galaxies are moving away from us, and that the further away a galaxy is, the faster it's moving away.
