Physics AQA GCSE 1.4 Generating Electricity Flashcards

Set of flashcards for revising P1.4

?
What 3 fuels can be used in conventional power stations for the national grid?
Fossil fuels (e.g. Coal/Oil/Natural Gas), Biomass (Wood; Nuclear fuel)
1 of 10
Name 2 renewable sources that use natural sources of heat.
Solar and Geothermal
2 of 10
Name 4 sources of renewable energy that turn turbines directly
Hydroelectric, Wave Turbines, Wind Turbines, Tidal power
3 of 10
What purpose do step-up transformers have?
They increase the voltage of electricity, so less energy is lost from electrical resistance, making the system more efficient
4 of 10
What purpose do step-down transformers have?
To reduce the voltage of the electricity, so that it is safe for use in people's homes.
5 of 10
Why is wind power not an ideal energy source? (2 reasons)
Wind is often unreliable, and turbines are difficult to maintain if the turbines are located out at sea where winds are strongest
6 of 10
Suggest 2 advantages of wood as a biofuel
It is sustainable and carbon neutral if trees are re-planted
7 of 10
Suggest two disadvantages of wood as a biofuel
It still releases a lot of CO2 when it is burnt
8 of 10
Briefly describe Carbon capture
When Carbon Dioxide is captured when fossil fuels are burnt, and then is piped into depleted oil or gas fields
9 of 10
Suggest 4 significant effects on the environment from the generation of electricity
Release of substances (e.g. CO2) into the atmosphere, production of toxic waste materials, noise/visual pollution, destruction of wildlife/habitats
