What is the National Grid?
A network of transmission cables and transformers.
1 of 9
What does the National Grid transmit?
Electricity.
2 of 9
How can you increase the efficiency of the National Grid?
Its cheaper to boost the voltage up to around 400,000 V and keep the current low which increases the efficiency.
3 of 9
Name the two types of transformer in the National Grid.
Step-up transformers and Step-down transformers
4 of 9
Positives of overhead cables.
The set up costs are cheaper, if a fault occurs they are easy to access, they cause minimal effect on land.
5 of 9
Negatives of overheard cables.
Lots of maintenance is needed, they look unattractive, they are affected by weather, less reliable.
6 of 9
Positives of underground cables.
They need minimal maintenance, they aren't seen, they aren't affected by the weather, they are more reliable.
7 of 9
Name two ways in which we can ensure that energy demands are met.
The energy supplied to the National Grid will need to be increased or the demand from consumers will need to decrease.
8 of 9
Name how the supply can be increased and how the demand can be decreased.
Supply- more power stations can be built and more energy can be outputted. Demand- consumers can use more energy-efficient appliances.
