What is the difference between Speed and Velocity?
Speed is how fast you're going with no regard to direction, whereas Velocity is speed in a given direction.
1 of 22
Definition of a)Acceleration b)Deceleration
a)The change in velocity per second. b)negative acceleration (slowing down).
2 of 22
a)What happens when two objects interact? b)What is the unit of force?
a)They exert equal and opposite forces on each other. b) Newton (N)
3 of 22
What can a force change about an object?
1)The shape of an object 2)It's motion 3)It's state of rest
4 of 22
Definition of a resultant force.
A single force which has the same effect as all the forces acting on the object.
5 of 22
What two forces oppose the driving force of a car?
1)Friction 2)Air resistance
6 of 22
Definition: a)Weight & b)Mass of an object
a)The force of gravity acting on it & b)the quantity of matter in the object.
7 of 22
What 2 things does the stopping distance of a car depend on?
The thinking distance and the braking distance.
8 of 22
What things increase a)the braking distance? & b)the thinking distance?
a)High speed, poor weather conditions and poor maintenance (such as: how good brakes and tyres are) b)high speed, poor reaction time, due to alcohol, tiredness and use of mobile phones.
9 of 22
What is Terminal Velocity?
The velocity a falling object reaches when falling in a fluid. The weight is then equal to the drag force.
10 of 22
If two forces act on an object along the same line, what is the resultant force if theyre acting in: a)same direction or b)opposite directions?
a)Their sum & b)Their difference
11 of 22
What is Hookes law?
The extension of a spring is directly proportional to the force applied, provided its limit of proportionality isn't exceeded.
12 of 22
1)Why do average speed cameras come in pairs? & 2)How can the fuel economy be improved?
1)To measure the average speed. 2)By reducing speed or fitting wind deflectors.
13 of 22
What is 'Work done'?
When a force moves an object through a distance, energy is transferred and work is done.
14 of 22
What is the advantage of using regenerative braking systems?
They store the energy of braking rather than wasting it. As the motor acts as an electric generator, converting kinetic into electrical energy which is stored as chemical energy in the vehicles battery.
15 of 22
How are a)Crumple Zones & b)Side impact bars useful in a crash?
a)They crumple up on impact and increase the impact time, decreasing the force produced by the change in momentum. & b)They're strong metal tubes in car door panels, which help direct the kinetic energy of the crash away from the passengers.
16 of 22
How are a)Seat belts & b)Air bags useful in a crash?
a)They stretch slightly, increasing the time taken for the wearer to stop, which reduces the forces acting in the chest. Some of the kinetic energy is absorbed by the seatbelt stretching. b)Slow you down more gradually & prevent you from hitting hard

What does a car thats 'aerodynamic' mean?
That its shaped in such a way that air flows very easily and smoothly past it, so minimising its air resistance. (Can have higher top speeds)
21 of 22
When vehicles collide, what does the force of the impact depend on? (3 things)
1)Mass 2)Change of Velocity 3)Duration of impact.
