Ecosystems UNIT 1 SECTION B

?
What are biotic components of an ecosystem?
Living factors: fish, plants, etc.
1 of 20
What are abiotic components of an ecosystem?
Non-living factors: temperature, light, soil, etc.
2 of 20
Define producers and give an example.
Producers convert energy from the environment into sugars.
Eg. plants that convert energy by photosynthesis.
3 of 20
Define consumers and give an example.
Consumers get energy from the sugars produced by the producers.
Eg. a pond snail because it eats plants.
4 of 20
Define decomposers and give an example.
Decomposers break down plant and animal material and return the nutrients to the soil.
Eg. bacteria and fungi.
5 of 20
What does a food chain show?
A food chain shows the links between producers and consumers.
6 of 20
What does a food web show?
A food web shows all the connections between producers and consumers in a more complex way.
7 of 20
Explain nutrient cycling.
When plants or animals die, the decomposers help to recycle the nutrients, making them available once again for the growth of plants or animals.
8 of 20
What is a natural change that affects ecosystems?
Extreme weather such as droughts.
9 of 20
What are 2 human changes that affect ecosystems?
Removal of hedges destroy habitats and alter the plant/animal balance.

Woods cut down destroys habitats for birds.
10 of 20
What are the weather + temperature characteristics of a tropical rainforest?
High temperatures
Heavy rainfall
11 of 20
What are the weather + temperature characteristics of a desert?
High daytime temperatures
Low night time temperatures
Low rainfall
12 of 20
What are the temperature characteristics of a polar ecosystem?
Low temperatures
Dry conditions
13 of 20
What are the weather + temperature characteristics of deciduous and coniferous forests?
Brief summer months
Better suited to colder climates
14 of 20
What are the temperature characteristics of a temperate grassland ecosystems?
Refer to seasons.
Warm, dry summers
Cold winters
15 of 20
What are the weather + temperature characteristics of mediterranean ecosystems?
Refer to seasons.
Hot, dry summers
Mild winters
16 of 20
What are the weather + temperature characteristics of a tropical grassland ecosystem?
Dry season can be hot with wildfires
Thunderstorms can occur during wet season
17 of 20
What are the weather + temperature characteristics of a tundra ecosystem?
Cold
Windy
Dry
18 of 20
Why are plants ideal for tropical rainforests?
Heavy rainfall is ideal for growth of plants.
19 of 20
How are plants and animals adapted to live in the desert?
Animals: thick eyebrows to block sun, wide feet so they don't sink in sand,
