What factors affect dual task performance?
Practise, task difficulty, task similarity (sense and response)
1 of 7
What did Spelke do?
He improved the ability of pps dual tasking by giving them 4 months of training - therefore suggesting practising improves dual tasking
2 of 7
What did sullivan do/find?
Gave pps 2 simultaneous tasks and variated the difficulty of the first. As the difficulty of the first increased, the pps ability to do the second decreased- suggests task difficulty affects dual task performance.
3 of 7
Who developed the central capacity theory?
Kahneman
4 of 7
Outline the central capacity theory
There is one shaped pool of limited resource for tasks, when the resources needed to complete both tasks exceeds this, dual task costs are seen. however, tasks can be prioritised/ignored.
5 of 7
What is the support for this theory?
Bourke - gave pps 2 auditory tasks, told that one was more important- found that task difficulty increased interference but task importance had no effect,
6 of 7
Further support?
Support was also found from brain imaging studies - parts of the brain were less active during dual tasks- activity shared.
