What is the definition of conflict?
Anger or hatred between people eg. Marriage breakdown or divorce.

What is the definition of Reconciliation?
To repair a broken relationship, to make up and build bridges, eg. Forgiving each other.

Give some reasons for divorce.
People marry too young; or too quickly; people don’t talk and plan, eg. Do they have the same views on work, having children, money; may not have same values of life.There may be violence/abuse.Divorce is now also acceptable.

What is a major cause of divorce and what are the religious teachings of Christianity on this issue?
Adultery – Christianity: In the 10 commandments it says “Do not commit adultery”. Also Jesus said it was the only reason to allow divorce as it breaks the vow to “be faithful... till death do us part.”

What is the Islamic view of adultery?
Adultery is the worst form of theft, breaking their vows and legal contract; shaming their family.

What are the overall Christian views on Divorce?
Jesus said divorce was allowed after one partner had committed adultery. He also said that a man cannot cast his wife aside. “What God has joined, let no man separate” so therefore the marriage still stands and to remarry will be adultery.

What are the Roman Catholic views on Divorce?
It does not allow divorce as marriage is for life due to the vows were made “till death do us part”. The marriage would still stand in God’s eyes. If there is abuse, the wife doesn’t have to stay- separation is allowed but not divorce.

When will the Roman Catholic Church allow Divorce?
They may allow an annulment (if the marriage wasn’t a true marriage in the first place- e.g. never consummated.)

What are the Protestant Church's views on Divorce?
They don’t like divorce however they accept marriages don’t always work. They emphasise Jesus’ teachings on forgiving and second chances.

What are the Islamic views on Divorce?
If the marriage is causing great unhappiness divorce is allowed as a last resort. Muhammad said, “of all things permitted, divorce is the most hated by Allah.” The families will try to reconcile the couple.

What is the Muslim Divorce process?
The husband must state the marriage is over, in front of witnesses on three separate occasions. The wife is given the final part of her dowry. For three months they stay in the same house but do not sleep together(in case there is a child)

What is the Roman Catholic view on Remarriage?
They won’t accept a divorce, so the original marriage stands so they won’t accept remarriage, the only way is annulment of the previous marriage.

What is the Anglican view on Remarriage?
The remarriage can’t occur in a church as they can’t make the vows before God again after having broken them. However they will do a blessing in the church after a registry office wedding.

What is the Protestant view on Remarriage?
They will allow remarriage in the church. However if someone in the couple was to blame for their last marriage failing they will insist on repentance first.

What is the Islamic view on Remarriage?
As long as the divorce was properly conducted, either partner is free to remarry in a mosque.
