What is LDL?
Low density lipoprotein - They transport cholesterol in the blood to the tissues, classified as 'bad' cholesterol as they are linked to an increased risk of heart disease.

What is HDH?
High density lipoprotein - They transport excess cholesterol in the blood back to the liver where it is broken down, classified as 'good' cholesterol as they lower the risk of heart disease.

What are trans-fats?
A type of unsaturated fat that can be found in meat and dairy products, most are made from an industrial process that adds hydrogen to liquid vegetable oil to make it solid at room temperature.

Why are trans-fats good?
Artificial trans-fats allow food to have a long shelf life.

Why are trans-fats bad?
They can lead to high levels of blood cholesterol.

What are proteins made up of?
Amino acids

They are easily digested and are found in fruits.

They usually take longer for the body to digest, they are found in nearly-all plant based foods.

What is glucose?
A simple sugar and the major source of energy for the body's cells.

What is glycogen?
The stored form of glucose found in the muscles and the liver.

This ranks carbohydrates according to their effect on our blood glucose levels.

What are carbohydrates exercise related function?
Source of energy for both low intensity and high intensity exercise. Only food source that can be broken down anaerobically.

What are fats exercise related function?
It is used for long duration, low intensity exercise such as a marathon.

What are proteins exercise related function?
Minor source of energy and tend to be used more by power athletes who have a greater need to repair and develop muscle tissue.

What are electrolytes?
Salts and minerals found in the blood that can conduct electrical impulses in the body.

Why is fibre important in the diet?
During exercise it can slow down the time it takes the body to break down food.

What is dehydration?
Occurs when the body is losing more fluid than it is taking in.

What happens when dehydration occurs?
Blood viscosity increases, reducing blood flow to working muscles and the skin. Reduced sweating to prevent water loss, which results in an increase in core temperature. Muscle fatigue. Increase heart rate resulting in a lower cardiac output.
