Like metaphors, they help us to visualise the information/description, bring it to life in a pictorial fashion

By using colours, a writer can make a description vivid and memorable

Find things that are interersting and comment on them; why did the writer select that precise word or phrase? (fizzle? crackle?)

Atmosphere - tense, happy, fearful, gloomy....?
The atmosphere is created throughout the writing and can change or remain the same

Sounds - not just onomatopoeia!
Bringing writing to life often depends on the sounds ; the jangling of a telephone, the clunk of a ball hitting a bat for example. Sounds add detail.

Smells - baking bread; candy-floss; hotdogs...mouth watering!
Smells can also bring writing vividly to life - it also make the writing more detailed
