Cohen's Theory
Suggests gangs attempted to replace society's common norms and values with their own sub-cultures.

Cloward and Ohlin's Theory
There are 3 different types of sub-cultures that young people might enter into: criminal, conflict or retreatist.

Walter D. Miller's Theory
A deviant sub-culture doesn't arise from the inability of the members to achieve success. Instead, crime is a result of the fact that there is a lower class sub-culture with different norms and values to the rest of society.q

Matza's Theory
Delinquents aren't really in opposition to society's norms and values. Society has a moral stronghold over them and this prevents them from engaging in delinquent activities for most of the time. These people often show remorse for their actions.

Ethnocentrism
Viewing our own culture as superior to other cultures.

Xenocentrism
Preferring and adapting to a culture different to one's own.
