When was the CFE Agreement signed? What did it entail?
The CFE was agreement signed in 1990. Limited the non-nuclear forces that the Warsaw Pact & NATO could have in Europe. Negotiations began in 1989 it was difficult as the USSR was beginning to break up at this time.

What did Gorbachev announce in December 1988 with regards to trade?
In December 1988 he announced ideology will play a smaller roll in current affairs. Therefore the USSR would no longer favour trade with communist states.

F: Foreign affairs- would no longer favour trade with communist countries. E: Eatern European states could enjoy Glasnost and Perestroika. W: Withdrew Soviet troops from Eastern European bases (to save money).

Domino theory = by the US. Stated: as one country became communist others would follow. But Gorbachev's reforms appeared to weaken communism & Eastern European countries gained more independence& broke from communism. Contributing to tUSSR's collapse

WHy did the East German government have to announce greater freedom of travel?
Democratic elections were announce in Hungary so there was a mass movement of Easts Germans through Hungary to West Ger. As part of this on the 9th November East Ger gov. announced that East Germans could cross the border with West Berlin.

There was no longer any travel restrictions so there was no purpose for it being there.

WHen was the Warsaw Pact Formally dissolved? Why?
Te Warsaw pact formally dissolved in July 1991. As the Eastern Block disintegrated the Warsaw pact could not survive.

What was the Soviet reaction to the fall of the wall?
In the West, Gorbachev=respected and liked. In Russia, Gorbachev was treated with suspicion and leading members of the communist Party believed perestroika and glasnost weakened communism.

What happened on the 19th August 1991?
On the 19th August 1991 a group of senior communist gov. officials (the 'gang of eight') organised a coup which removed Gorbachev from power.

Was the coup successful?
Initially coup= successful & Gorbachev= unable to return to the capital. But the New gov only lasted 3 days - Boris Yeltsin (future President) played a large role in defeating the coup he said new gov = illegal & told people to resist the new regime

It damaged his authority and made Yeltsin a popular leader.

What was Gorbachev's final attempt to save the USSR? DId it work?
His final attempt was the introduction of a new constitution- designed to give Soviet republics more independence. But leaders wanted full independence so the constitution wasn't accepted.

He announced the dissolution of the USSR and his resignation on 25th December 1991.
