smart materials behave differently depending on the conditions, like temperature.
1 of 6
what's an example of a smart material?
Nitinol - a shape memory alloy. A metal alloy that can bend and twist when cool, but if bent to far it stays bent. However, heat it to a certain temperature and it goes back to it's usual shape.

what are shape memory alloys (nitinol) used for?
glasses frames and for dental braces
3 of 6
what are nanoparticles used for?
new cosmetics; suncream and deodrant, nanodmedicine, new industrial catalysts, and computer chips.
4 of 6
what are thermosoftening polymers?
They have weak intermolecular forces and don't have cross linking chains, which means the individual chains are free to slid over each other, making it very easy to melt the plastic. You can melt these and remould them.
5 of 6
what are thermosetting polymers?
They have strong intermolecular forces between the polymer chains called crosslinks. These hold the chains in a solid structure so the poylmer (plastic) doesn't soften when heated. They're strong, hard and rigid.
