what is paper chromatography used for?
Seperating coloured compounds.
1 of 11
What is a mobile phase?Give 3 examples of a mobile phase.
A mobile phase is a solvent. Examples include water, alcohol and propanone.
2 of 11
Why would a lid be used in a paper chromatography experiment?
To stop liquids evaporating. especially if it is an organic compound.
3 of 11
What is a stationary phase?
Chromatography paper.
4 of 11
On the results of the chromatography there is a red dot high up the paper what does this suggest?
Because the dot is higher it would suggest the red ink is very soluble.
5 of 11
On the results of the chromatography the blue dot is low on the chromatography paper what does this suggest?
The dot as low down on the paper which means it is less soluble.
6 of 11
An unknown colour was tested using paper chromatography. The results show a red dot and blue dot. what Colour is the unknown ink and how many colours is it made up of?
Purple. 2 colours red and blue.
7 of 11
Once you have finished the experiment where would you draw a line on the chromatography paper?
You would draw a line of how far the solvent travelled.
8 of 11
Before the experiment starts where would you draw a line on the chromatography paper?
Roughly 1-2 cm above the bottom of the paper.
9 of 11
What would you use to draw this line? Give a reason for this.
Pencil. This is because a pen would interfere with the experiment and affect the colour which are detected.
10 of 11
How would you calculate the rf value?
Distance travelled by spot ÷ Distance travelled by solvent.
