?
What is a pure substance?
A substance that contains only one type of atom or compound
1 of 30
What is an impure substance?
A substance that contains more than one substance which then forms a mixture
2 of 30
What does chromatography do?
It separates dissolved pigments in solution
3 of 30
What does filtration do?
It separates an insoluble solid from a liquid by passing the solid/liquid mixture through the filter paper
4 of 30
What is filtrate?
The liquid which passes through the filter paper and the solid left behind is the residue.
5 of 30
What does evaporation do?
It removes the liquid part of a mixture and collects the dissolved solid
6 of 30
What does distillation do?
Distillation is a process that can be used to separate a pure liquid from a mixture of liquids.
7 of 30
What is combustion?
The reaction between a fuel and oxygen
8 of 30
Formula for combustion
fuel + oxygen = carbon dioxide + water + energy
9 of 30
What is thermal decomposition?
When compounds break down into new molecules when heated
10 of 30
What is oxidation?
When substances gain oxygen in a reaction
11 of 30
What does reduction mean?
Losing oxygen in a reaction
12 of 30
What does physical change mean?
When a substance changes state. e,g liquid to solid
13 of 30
What is the left side of an equation called?
reactants
14 of 30
What is the right side of an equation called?
products
15 of 30
What is oxidation?
Reacting an element or compound with oxygen
16 of 30
What are some properties of metals?
- Conduct electricity and heat
17 of 30
What are some properties of metals?
Conduct electricity and heat, are malleable (can be hammered in to shape), are ductile (can be drawn into wires), are shiny, high melting and boiling point
18 of 30
What are some properties of non-metals/
Unable to conduct electricity and heat, low melting and boiling point, lower density than metals
19 of 30
What is combustion?
Where a fuel reacts with oxygen forming carbon dioxide and water.
20 of 30
What is sublimation?
The change from a solid to a gas or from a gas to a solid
21 of 30
What is diffusion?
The name of the process whereby molecules in a liquid or gas mix as a result of their random motion
22 of 30
What is kinetic energy?
Movement energy. The more movement, the more energy
23 of 30
What is an exothermic reaction?
A reaction that produces heat energy
24 of 30
What is an endothermic reaction?
A reaction that takes in energy from the environment
25 of 30
What is a catalyst?
A substance that reduces the activation energy and increases the rate of reaction
26 of 30
What is an indicator used for?
To find out what type of substance a chemical is
27 of 30
What is neutralisation?
A reaction in which acidity or alkalinity is removed, In all neutralisation reactions water is made
28 of 30
What is the order of reactivity? (From the most reactive)
Potassium, Sodium, Calcium, Magnesium, Aluminium, Carbon, Zinc, Iron, Tin, Lead, Copper, Silver, Gold, Platinum
29 of 30
What is a displacement reaction and what happens?
When one metal is more reactive than the other it will displace it, If the metal in the compound is lower in the reactivity series than the introduced metal or carbon then the introduced metal will displace the metal in the compound
