Problems faced by Mary in term of reforming religion
Protestantism had some support, the Protestant CofE was protected in statute law, many political elites benefited from acquisition of monastic lands + didn't want to give them up.

First statute of appeal: repealed religious legislation of Edward's reign, order of service at Henry VIII's death=restored, legal status of Church was upheld.

Mary's 3rd parliament: Heresy laws restored

Second statute of repeal: repealed anti-papal legislation (Act of Supremacy) from Henry VIII's reign. Burnings for heresy begin. Pope Julius III died, succeeded by anti-Spanish pope Paul IV.

Burning of heretics?
Caused widespread sympathy for victims, -ve for Mary's reputation. 289 Protestants burnt. -ve reputation is shown when the Council banned servants, apprentices and the young from attending,

Population increase: inflation. Debasement still impacted inflation. Harvest failures. Influenza. On the other hand, Crown made may financial improvements in long term.

Wyatt's Rebellion
1554: Foreign marriage, religion (protestant supporters), xenophobia. 3000 men. Came to close success. Uprisings in Devon, Hertfordshire, Kent

Wyatt's rebellion signifance?
1) showed Mary that protestants could not be ignored. 2) showed suspicion towards Spanish marriage. 3) Resulted in execution of LJG. 4) Elizabeth imprisoned. 5) Wyatt raised large following.

Who was Pole?
Reginald Pole, Pope Julius III's legate

Mary's relationship with new Pope Paul IV?
He was anti-Spanish (so was hostile towards her husband), accused Pole of heresy but Mary refused to let him go to Rome to face charge, she refused to acknowledge the new papal legate and therefore superior papal authority.
