Cell adhesion junctions

?
What are the different types of cell junctions?
anchoring junctions-adhesion ot other cells/matrix which transmits mechanical stress across interior of cell. Occluding junctions- seal membranes of neighbouring cells creating a permeability barrier.

Channel-forming junctions -link cytoplasms together allowing movement of small molecules between these channels. Signalling -relaying junctions-allow one cell to signal to another at area of cell to cell contact.
2 of 11
What are adherin junctions?
Cadherin repeats linked together by flexible domains. attachment of Ca2= prevents movement and allows it to attach ot neighbouring junctions. only with cells of the same type so cells assemble and organise tissues.
3 of 11
What are desmosomes?
The are connected to the IMF of the cell, also using cadherin but also dense plaque anchor protiens and desmoplakin. Give epithelial cell mechanical strength.
4 of 11
Describe occluding junctions
They form a seal between cells at the side of the cell. Caludin and occludin proteins wrap around the entire circumference of every epithelial cell.
5 of 11
What are GAG and prooglycans and what do they do?
They are polysaccarides that have sulphate or carboxyl groups that give the sugar a negative charge. therefore they are osmotically active and pull alot of tissue into connective tissue ECM mass influx of water so resists compression.
6 of 11
How is collagen helpful?
forms fibres for tensile strength
7 of 11
What is fibronectin?
Another glycoprotein, two chains bonded by disulfide bridges helps cells to attach to ECM and gives them a binding site.
8 of 11
What are integrin?
How cells interact with ECm as they are specialised transmembrane proteins made of two subunits.
9 of 11
What is inside out activation?
strong binding of talin on the inside of the cell forces a and b subunits of integrin apart making it active. or something can bind to a and b and activate.
10 of 11
What are hemidesmosomes?
Stable anchorage of epithelial cells to underlying basal lamina.
