What functional group do carboxylic acids have ?
-COOH
1 of 18
What do the names of carboxylic acids end with ?
'-anoic acid'
2 of 18
Draw the four carboxylic acids with their name & symbols
*Check your revision guide*
3 of 18
How are carboxylic acids similar to normal acids ?
They react just like any other acid with carbonates to produce carbon dioxide.
4 of 18
What do the salts carboxylic acids form end in ? & example
'anoate' e.g. Methanoic acid will form methanoate, (owtte)
5 of 18
Word equation for ethanoic acid reacting with sodium carbonate
ethanoic acid + sodium carbonate -> carbon dioxide + sodium ethanoate
6 of 18
What is formed when carboxylic acids are dissolved in water ?
Carboxylic acids dissolve in water to form acidic solutions
7 of 18
What makes the solutions acidic ?
When carboxylic acids dissolve in water they ionise & release hydrogen (H+) ions which is what causes the solutions to be acidic
8 of 18
What kind of acidic solutions do they form ?
Weak acidic solutions
9 of 18
Why do they form weak acidic solutions ?
They form weak acidic because they incompletely ionise (not many H+ ions are released)
10 of 18
What do they form a higher pH than ?
They form a higher pH than aqueous solutions of strong acids with the same concentrations
11 of 18
How can ethanoic acid be formed
By oxidising ethanol
12 of 18
What type of microbes can cause ethanol to ferment ?
Yeast
13 of 18
What can ethanol also be oxidised by ?
By using oxidising agents
14 of 18
What is the word equation for oxidising ethanol ?
Ethanol + Oxygen -> Ethanoic acid + Water
15 of 18
After oxidisng ethanol explain a common use of ethanoic acid
The ethanoic acid can then be dissolved in water to make vinegar which is used for flavouring and preserving foods.
16 of 18
Name another carboxylic acid and state what it is present in and what it is used to make.
Citric acid is another carboxylic acid which is present in oranges and lemons it is made in large quantities to make fizzy drinks. it is also used to remove scale.
17 of 18
State 2 ways in which carboxylic acids are used in industry
Carboxylic acids with longer chais are used to make soap and detergents
