What is ATP and how do we get energy from it? (5)
Stands for Adenosine Triphosphate
Only useable energy source in body
Made up of 1 Adenosine and 3 phosphates
ATPase helps break off 1 phosphate
This leaves ADP and a phosphate and energy
Provides about 2-3 seconds of energy
Sporting example is Shot Put th
1 of 7
Explain the ATP/PC (or phosphocreatine) energy system. (5)
Takes place in the muscle sarcoplasm
Phosphocreatine is broken down to a phosphate and a creatine
Enzyme used is Creatine Kinase
The phosphate joins ADP to produce ATP
1 ATP is produced per PC
Sporting example is 100m sprint
Full recovery takes about 3 mi
2 of 7
Explain the Lactic acid energy system (6)
Takes place in muscle sarcoplasm
Glycogen broken down to glucose by enzyme GPP
Glucose broken down to pyruvic acid by enzyme PFK
2 ATP produced
Pyruvic acid broken down to lactic acid by enzyme LDH
3 of 7
What are the 3 stages of the Aerobic system called and how many ATP is produced in each stage?
(3)
Aerobic glycolysis - 2 ATP
Kreb Cycle - 2 ATP
Electron Transport Chain - 34 ATP
4 of 7
Explain the aerobic glycolysis part of the aerobic system (5)
Takes place in sarcoplasm
2 ATP produced
Glycogen broken down to glucose then pyruvic acid
pyruvic acid combines with co-enzyme A
Forms Acetyl CoA
5 of 7
Explain the Kreb Cycle part of the aerobic system (5)
Takes place in matrix of mitochondria
Acetyl CoA combines with Oxaloacetic acid
Forms Citric acid and enters Kreb cycle
2 ATP produced
CO2 produced and removed
Hydrogen produced and used in ETC
Oxaloacetic acid reformed
6 of 7
Explain the Electron Transport Chain part of the aerobic system (5)
Takes place in Christae of mitochondria
34 ATP produced
Requires oxygen to combine with Hydrogen ions
Water is produced and removed
Hydrogen combines with NAD and FAD to produce NADH and FADH
