Biology B2 2.5 Organisms in their environment

?
What is the distribution of organisms affected by?
Environmental factors.
1 of 12
What are animals and plants affected by?
Physical factors.
2 of 12
What do living organisms form?
Communities.
3 of 12
What are the external factors that can influence relationships in and between communities?
Temperature, availability of nutrients, amount of light, availability of water, availability of oxygen and the availability of carbon dioxide.
4 of 12
How can temperature affect the distribution of organisms?
It affects the type of organisms within regions, for example arctic plants are small which limits the number of plant eaters which can survive in the area.
5 of 12
How can the availability of nutrients affect the distribution of organisms?
Most plants struggle to grow when mineral ions are in short supply and again few animals will survive in that area.
6 of 12
How can the amount of light affect the distribution of organisms?
fFew plants live on a forest floor because the light is blocked by the trees, shaded plants often have broader leaves or more chlorophyll.
7 of 12
How can the availability of water affect the distribution of organisms?
Water is important for all organisms so few will live in a desert. If it rains in the desert than plants grow, produce flowers and seeds very quickly. Then there will be food for animals.
8 of 12
How can the availability of oxygen affect the distribution of organisms?
Water animals can be affected by lack of oxygen. Some invertebrates can live at very low oxygen levels, but most fish need high levels of oxygen dissolved in water.
9 of 12
How can the availability of carbon dioxide affect the distribution of organisms?
Lack of carbon dioxide will affect plant growth and consequently the food available for animals.
10 of 12
Why are there so few animals living in very cold regions such as the Arctic?
Very few plants grow there - those that do are very small, so there is little food for animals.

**IF YOU ARE GIVEN DATA ABOUT THE DISTRIBUTION OF ORGANISMS, LOOK FOR REASONS WHY PLANTS MIGHT NOT BE ABLE TO GROW THERE. PLANTS SUPPLY FOOD FOR ANIMALS SO FEWER PLANTS RESULTS IN FEWER ANIMALS**
