What is bioenergy?
Energy stored in organic material (biomass), produced from resources in nature, storable, used for electricity, heating and transport.
1 of 7
What is biomethane?
Upgraded biogas: involves scrubbing out the CO2 up to 98% methane.
2 of 7
What legislation is there for biomethane?
Biofuel Directive 2003: reference value of 5.75% biofuels in petrol and diesel for transport by 2010. Reporting obligations; national measures for promotion of biofuels.

RED I: mandatory biofuel targets.

Fuel Quality Directive 2009: 6% reduction of GHG
3 of 7
What are the sustainability criteria under the RED?
Compliance is voluntary but necessary for contribution towards the targets. Biofuels that do not comply are not considered renewable energy.

The exception is small installations and remote installations in the outermost regions.

What are the targets for biofuels under RED I and RED II?
RED I: minimum 30% GHG emission saving has to come from biofuels.

RED II: trajectory from 50%-80%.

What is Indirect Land Use Change?
ILUC is the use of agircultural land where agricultural production is still necessary, leading to the extension of this land into non-crop land, including areas with high carbon stock. This can result in the release of CO2 from trees/soil, negating GHG sa

What provisons are in place for ILUC?
RED II sets limits on high ILUC risk biogas fuels. Limits the amount of these that states can count towards national targets for renewables.

Exception for those regarded as low ILUC risk and delegated regulation sets out specific criteria for determining
