Bio 3.5 Controlling Body Temperature

  1. I apoligies for any shortening of words EG Temperature (Temp) and so on. Hope it wasnt to much of a disadvantage.
  2.  Be sure to leave feedback on how i can improve
  3. Check out my other revision cards, they will have everything you need im sure

What temperature must the body be controlled at?
37 Degrees centigrade
1 of 17
Where is blood Temperature monitored?
Thermoregulatory centre in the brain
2 of 17
How is this monitored?
The centre has receptors which detect temp of blood flow through the brain
3 of 17
Where else is Temperature monitored?
The skin
4 of 17
How?
Temp receptors in the skin also send impulses to the brain carrying info on temp
5 of 17
If Temp rises, what happens to blood vessels near the skin?
They dilate, increasing blood flow through capillaries
6 of 17
How does this help reduce body temp?
Energy is transferred by radiation and the skin is cooled
7 of 17
If Temp rises what happens to sweat glands?
Sweat glands produce more sweat.
8 of 17
Why is this helpful is reducing body temp?
Energy needed for water evaporation comes from skins surface.
9 of 17
If Temp falls, what happens to blood vessels near the skin?
Blood vessels near the surface of the skin CONSTRICT
10 of 17
How does this increase body temperature?
Less blood flows through skin capillaries reducing energy radiated
11 of 17
If Temp falls, what happens to the muscles?
Muscles CONTRACT quickly
12 of 17
How does this help increase body temp?
This requires respiration and some of the energy is used to heat the blood
13 of 17
State what happens when pupils (Eyes) dilate?
Pupils widen
14 of 17
State what happens when pupils constrict?
Pupils get smaller
15 of 17
What happens to muscles when we get cold?
They CONTRACT
16 of 17
What happens to blood vessels when we get cold?
They CONSTRICT
