The eye
Orbit, sclera, cornea, iris, pupil, retina, optic nerve
1 of 20
eye moved by ? oculomotor muscles
6
2 of 20
Light
Visual system only responds to a quanta of light of a certain wavelength (380-760nm) -these quanta are called photons
3 of 20
3 dimensions of perception of light
brightness, hue (shade of colour), saturation (depth of colour)
4 of 20
lateral inhibition
interconnected neurons in retina inhibit their neighbours, result is a perceived contrast at edges of regions, however 2 patches that appear to differ have same amount of light
5 of 20
binocular disparity
2 eyes to enable VS to create 3D images from 2D retinal images -diff in position of same image on the 2 retinas
6 of 20
cells of retina
-5 layers light must pass through to reach receptors, photoreceptors include rods and cones
7 of 20
Rods and cones
-activate bipolar cells which activate ganglion cells which form optic nerve -optic nerve carries visual info to brain
8 of 20
retinal cells
-horizontal cells connect with receptor cells and bipolar cells -amacrine cells connect with bipolar and ganglion cells -fovea-thinning of retina ganglion cell layer at centre of retina (high acuity region)
9 of 20
cones
cone shaped receptors, for vision in good lighting, high acuity&colour, photopic vision -only cones found in fovea-high acuity
10 of 20
rods
rod shaped receptors, more sensitive for dim lighting, lacks detail and colour, scotopic vision
11 of 20
parvocellular
colour, fine detail
12 of 20
magnocullular
movement
13 of 20
V1
primary visual cortex
14 of 20
V3
form
15 of 20
V4
colour perception
16 of 20
V5 (MT)
motion
17 of 20
mach bands
non-existent strips of brightness and darkness running alongside the edges
18 of 20
on centre cells
light falls on centre to trigger
19 of 20
off centre cells
light falls on surround to trigger
20 of 20
