CN Neuroscience Attention Critical Analysis

Advantages

  • Supporting evidence for efficient processing in task-specific brain regions, biased competition and source/site
  • Neglect patients support attention control networks, and imbalanced neuron model accounts for bias rather than lose
  • Aligns with research into object recognition, providing integrated understanding of brain mechanisms
  • Subcortical role helps understand why neglect retains reaction to implicit stimulus
  • Attention facilitates priority processing and dealing with overload, allowing adaptive responses - Reflexive keeps processing balanced
  • Helps understand behaviour such as sports or army combat in which attention is key to success - Also understand health deficits such as pain
  • Combining ERP and MRI allowed understanding of attention modulation to specific timescales and regions - Task-specific monitoring in fMRI

Disadvantages

  • Unknown why sources and sites are needed in separate pathways
  • Efficient processing of attention is not maintained after 300ms unless over-riden by saliency information
  • Using neglect patients to infer attention system is limited due to uncertainty of area causing deficits, as damaged sites are spread
  • Neuroimaging makes it difficult to investigate attention in the perceptual-overload context that it occurs in, thus limiting conclusions about its efficient impacts

Evaluation

The evidence used to support neuroscience theories of attention mechanisms may fail to provide contexts that can be generalised to everyday contexts. However, extensive research supports the proposed theories and accounts for why these systems developed: to enable adaptive interaction and responses in the environment, helping to understand specific behaviours.
