Baddeley's study of encoding

?
What was the aim of Baddeley's study?
To see if there was a difference in the type of encoding used in short term memory and long term memory.
1 of 17
How many groups were there and what was each group called?
4 groups that were called either A B C or D
2 of 17
How many sets of words did each group have to listen to?
12
3 of 17
How many words were in each set?
5
4 of 17
Which 2 groups had to recall the words after each set immediately?
A and B
5 of 17
How long did groups C and D have to wait to recall the words?
20 minutes
6 of 17
What type of words did group A have?
Acoustically similar. e.g. Cab, Can, Mad, Man, Map
7 of 17
What type of words did group B have?
Acoustically dissimilar words. e.g. Hat, Stage, Ball
8 of 17
What type of words did group C have?
Semantically similar words. e.g. Big, Large, Huge
9 of 17
What type of words did group D have?
Semantically dissimilar words. e.g. Thin, Hot, Safe
10 of 17
Why might people in group A have done worse than people in group B?
Because they may have gotten the words mixed up and put them in the wrong order.
11 of 17
What memory storage does group A and B apply to?
Short term memory beacause they recalled it immediately
12 of 17
What memory storage does group C and D supposedly apply to?
Long term memory as the had to recall after 20 minutes
13 of 17
What does group C doing worse than group D have to do with how long term memory is encoded?
Information is encoded semantically if not rcalled immediately
14 of 17
Why did group C do worse than group D?
Because the words were too semantically similar so the participants may have gotten confused on the order of the words
15 of 17
Name one strength of the study.
It was well controlled which enhances the validity of the results
16 of 17
Name 2 weaknesses of the study.
-Short term memory can sometimes be encoded visually whereas the study did it acoustically
-Was long term memory really being tested because 20 minutes may not be enough time to encode into long term memory
