Metre
2/4, 3/4. 4/4, 6/8; indicates how many beats are in a bar

Rhythm
Different lengths of notes put together to make patterns in time

Pulse
Beat of the music; "what you tap your feet to"

Syncopation
Accents placed on unimportant notes of the bar; often found in jazz music

Augmentation
Melodies or series' of notes are repeated for a longer duration; note values are usually doubled

Diminution
Note values of the original melodies are shortened; usually halved

Hemiola
Impression given of three minim in two bars of 3/4 time using ties over the bar lines; 3 against 2 feel

Cross- rhythm
Two rhythms in different metres played against each other

Tempo
Speed of the music; can be indicated by a word or tempo mark

Rubato
Change of speed in the music that is not written; usually directed by a soloist through the feeling/ mood of the piece

Polyrhythm
One or two different rhythms played at the same time to give a complex texture

Bi- rhythm
Specific type of polyrhythm consisting of two independent rhythms played simultaneously
