Mechanical Guidance
involves using a piece of equipment, apparatus or device to aid and shape movement
Advantages
- effective for cognitive learners
- useful in dangerous tasks - improves safety during performance
- reduces fear/ anxiety - builds confidence
- whole skill can be attempted
- allows performer to develop kinasthesis
Disadvantages
- performer may become reliant on the support
- bad habits might become instilled
- performer may become demotivated - not performing skill by themselves
- difficult to use with large groups
Manual Guidance
physical support for the performer by a mechanical device.e.g. holding the arms of the swimmer and forcing them through the movement of a certain stroke
Advantages
- effective for cognitive performers
- useful for dangerous tasks - improves safety during performance
- reduces fear/ anxiety - builds confidence
- whole skill can be attempted
- allows performer to develop kinasthesis
DIsadvantages
- performer may become reliant on the support
- could create incorrect kinasthesis - 'feeling' might not be correct
- bad habits may be instilled
- performer may be de-motivated…
