• Louis XVI crowned king
• Appointion of Turgot controller general: profree trade refrosm and proposed property tax- Hostility
• Riots in Paris due to bread price doubling ( poor harvest)

1776

• Turgot dismissed and replaced by Necker: sought to cut venal offices but this offended Antoinette and nobility

1778

• France entered American war of independence which Necker funded through loans

1781

• Necker issued first report on public finances in which he was dismissed and replaced by Fleury who reversed Necker reforms

1783

• American war of independence ended (cost france 1.3 billion livres)
• Calonne became controller general and sold offices and spent lavishly

1785

• Paris Parlement refused to agree new loans
