Theme A: Relationships and Families

What is this theme all about?

Theme A is all about personal and sexual relationships, including same-sex and hetrosexual relationships. Hetrosexual relationships are between people who are of the opposite sex. The theme moves to then explore how commitment happens and the reasons for divorce and then sometimes remarriage, and how families develop. Finally, it talks about gender equality, mainly in society.

Sex

Beliefs about sex and relationships has changed over time. Less than 60 years ago, it was illegal to be gay and there was widespread persecution of gay and lesbian (women who are attracted to other women). This is no longer such an issue, especially with the younger generation. 

People have sex for different reasons- love, lust, money, fun, and to make life. Below are some of the different types of relationships/personal situations which can occur.

  • Hetrosexuality- "We met at school and fell for each other. Since then, we've broken up a few times but always got back together and now we are in a very strong realtionship.
  • Same Sex Attraction- "We met at university and have been together ever since. The ever increasing freedom for same-sex relationships is really benefitting us and we are getting married this year"
  • Audultery- "Our marriage used to be very strong but I had an affair. It lasted for a few months. It has taken a long time to make up for it. Our marriage really took a battering, but we are working on it and trying to move on."
  • Celibacy- "I
