Newlands' Octaves

  • In the mid 1860's, John made progress in grouping elements. 
  • He listed the 56 elements in order of atomic mass (or atomic weight as it was known then)
  • He noticed a pattern-every eighth element had simlar properties so he grouped the elements
  • He called his discovery the law of octaves 

Mendeleev's Masterpiece

  • In 1869, Russian chemistry professor Dmitri Mendeleev made lots
