The 1916 coalition and Lloyd George becomes Prime Minister

The war ministry was led by Lloyd George after Kitchener had drowned at sea. His ambition and confidence were contrasted by the leadership of Asquith. On 1st December 1916, DLG propesed a three man committee to run the war without cabinet interference. DLG was popular with the press and in the country however Asquith had the support of Cabinet. Any pressure to support DLG came from backbench MPs not party leaders.

The Liberals were divided. By December 49 Liberal MPs were calling to reject Asquith with another 80 prepared to support DLG.
