States of Matter
There are three states of matter:
- solid
- liquid
- gas
Changes of State
- Melting - to become from liquid to solid
- Evaporation - to change from liquid to gas
- Freezing - to change from liquid to solid
- Condensation - to change from gas to liquid
- Sublimation - when a solid becomes a gas without becoming a liquid and vice versa
Solids, Liquids, Gases
Latent Heat
- Latent heat is the amount of energy absorbed or released by a chemical substance during a change of state
- No change of temperature occurs during this transition
- When a solid melts, latent heat absorbs energy to break bonds and disrupt arrangment of particles
- When freezing, latent heat releases energy to bond particles together
Freezing Point Depression
- salt can be used as a freezing point depressant
- it lowers melting point of ice so it melts faster and it makes it more difficult to freeze again
Diffusion
- diffusion is the movement of gas particles from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration
Solubility Vocabulary
- solvent - liquid that does the dissolving
- solute - the stuff that gets dissolved
- solution - solvent and solute together
- soluble - if something can dissolve it is called 'soluble'
- insoluble - if something cannot dissolve it is called 'insoluble'
- suspension - when insoluble stuff is…
