Outline and explain two reasons why leisure choices may vary across different age groups.

[10 marks]

One reason is due to external social committments such as work or family obligations. For example, women may be restricted to leisure due to family responsibilities. At a certain age, when a woman has a child, she may feel that her family life is more important than her choice in leisure activties. She may also change her choice in leisure activites as becoming a mother comes with responsibility, she may not be interested in going clubbing or going out drinking with her friends. Rather going for a walk with her family. Bradeley states that women assosiate leisure with neglecting family duties, therefore women who are at the age to have a chid, participate in less leisure activies or their leisure choices are centered around their child. This is a strong arguement because having a child is a life-changing period of life where the mother now has another person to care for aswell as herself so may have less time and interest for leisure activities. However, this arguement is limited because it suggests the mother is the only caregiver and disregards the fathers involvment.

A second reason is age legislation. Many people relate their leisure choices to their work, but not everybody can work. You must be 16 to start working in the UK, this means
